Summer Vacation in Kennebunk, Maine: A Teen's Perspective

Gooch's Beach.

Where did you spend your New England summer vacation?

I spent my vacation in Kennebunk and Kennebunkport, Maine.

What were the dates of your trip?

I stayed at the Franciscan Monastery from August 7 to August 14, 2010.

Who did you travel with?

I traveled with my family and met up with many people from my father's side

What was your primary reason for choosing New England?

It's always been a tradition to drive up to Maine and have fun with family.

What did you do on your New England summer vacation?

We went to the beach with our family and friends almost every day during our stay. There was Sports Day, which almost everyone participated in. The teens went kayaking for a few hours up the Kennebunk River, which was a lot of fun! My parents, sister, aunt and I went on a lighthouse cruise, which took us all the way from Ogunquit to the Nubble Lighthouse. We also did a lot of shopping in town, which is my favorite thing to do. We went out to dinner every night except for when we spent an afternoon at the hotel's saltwater pool and ordered pizzas. There was a night when we laid in a field and saw many shooting stars.

What made your trip to New England memorable?

I love going to Maine, and I look forward to it every summer. I would say the best restaurant (which we went to three times) would be Federal Jack's. But, the best clam chowder you can get is at Footbridge Lobster in Ogunquit! My favorite thing to do on the beach is boogie board in the ocean. Although the water is chilly (in the 60s), I sprint in and dunk myself just to get used to it!

There was also another night where there was a meteor shower, so we laid out on the beach at 9:00 at night. We were all bundled up, but because we were so cold, we went back to the Monastery after seeing some shooting stars anyway. All of us teens usually played games out on the porch every night, staying up late until almost 11 p.m. Maine is my favorite place to go to have fun, surrounded by friends and family.

Advice

  • Look in all the stores before you buy anything because you will most likely find the same item in more than one store!
  • Make sure you bring a few pairs of jeans, sweatshirts or sweatpants. It cools off very quickly at night.
  • HAVE FUN!

What a wonderful account of your time in Maine's Kennebunk region, Anastasia! It's nice to hear a teenager's view on spending a week-long summer vacation by the shore in Maine. ~Kim
