My daughter and I had our third opportunity to serve as gingerbread house judges on Friday, November 4, 2011, as the Boston Christmas Festival unveiled the spectacular creations entered in the annual Gingerbread House Competition. We always love this event, and Boston chefs once again impressed us with their creative confections. As you'll see in these photos, this year's winners featured extraordinary whimsy and detail.

Best in Show honors went to this delightful Grinch-themed gingerbread house, which was created by Nicole Coady and Zailda Smith of Finale Desserterie & Bakery Cafe. With its pastel colors, crooked trees and even an interior scene, it was my favorite entry, and my fellow judges agreed.

The hours invested in these gingerbread houses are significant, and the chefs' efforts are for a good cause. The Boston Christmas Festival runs through Sunday, November 6, 2011, at the Seaport World Trade Center, and at the festival's conclusion, these gingerbread masterpieces will be sold to the highest bidders. Proceeds benefit Housing Families, Inc., a Massachusetts non-profit dedicated to ending family homelessness.
