"We saw zucchinis FLYING through the air!" my three-year-old told anyone who would listen for weeks after we returned from Vermont in August of 2006. And she wasn't making it up. The zukapult competition is definitely the highlight of the Vermont State Zucchini Festival, held annually in Ludlow, Vermont, since 1997.
After a one-year hiatus in 2007, the Zucchini Festival is back August 16-17, 2008, and I couldn't be happier, since this quirky little event has been the anchor of my New England Summer Festivals A-Z round-up since 1998. You really have to see the Zucchini Festival to believe it. Luckily, I have pictures... just in case you can't get there this year. Warning: Like my husband, you may find yourself inspired to build a zukapult. If nothing else, you'll want to drive to Vermont to see what happens to a flying zucchini on impact.
