Windham Hill Inn is situated at the end of a dusty country lane on 160 picture-perfect, mountainview acres in West Townshend, Vermont. If you're anything like me, you'll be angsty when you realize your cell phone doesn't work here. After a day or two, though, you'll be so enchanted by the scenery, the accommodations and, especially, the service that contact with the outside world will seem highly overrated.
These photos from my May 2010 stay will introduce you to this 19th-century estate turned inn: a Relais & Châteaux property that is rustic, yet refined.
My visit wasn't without a few tiny flaws, but Windham Hill Inn has a secret weapon: Innkeeper Katja Matthews is as polished a hospitality pro as you'll find in New England, and her rapt attention to detail and sincere desire to delight guests imbue the inn with warmth. Chef Gill's inventive use of fresh ingredients delights diners. And the WiFi works perfectly if you really need to stay connected. My advice: Leave your laptop at home.
