Nana's Chocolate Fudge Cake Recipe

From

Joyce Voisine shares this recipe for Nana's Chocolate Fudge Cake, an old-fashioned dessert that's perfect for Valentine's Day or any time you're craving something rich and sweet.
Cook Time: 0 hours, 30 minutes
Ingredients:
  • 1/3 cup shortening, melted
  • 2 (2 oz.) envelopes premelted unsweetened chocolate
  • 1 egg
  • 1 cup sugar
  • 1-1/4 level cups all-purpose flour
  • 1/2 level tsp. baking soda
  • 1/2 level tsp. salt
  • 1/2 level tsp. vanilla
  • 3/4 level cup warm water
  • 1 cup semi-sweet chocolate bits
  • 12 walnuts
Preparation:
Melt shortening, remove from heat and cool.

In a 9-inch square cake pan, mix all ingredients at the same time, right in the cake pan.

Beat ingredients with a fork until smooth and creamy, about two minutes. Scrape the bottom and sides of the pan with a rubber spatula after one minute of beating.

Spread batter evenly in pan; sprinkle top of cake with semi-sweet chocolate bits.

Arrange the 12 walnuts in a line of threes on top of the cake and bake in a moderate oven (350 degrees) about 30 minutes or until the cake springs back when touched in center.

Cool in pan, then cut into square pieces. The chocolate bits will melt a little and be the frosting.
