The Rhode Island Public Transit Authority (RIPTA) offers water taxi service between Providence and Newport. The RIPTA ferry will operate seven days a week, including holidays, from June 22 through October 18, 2009.
RIPTA General Manager Beverly Scott said in a press release, "The ferry is not only a relaxing way to travel between Providence and Newport--it's also a great way to save on gas, avoid parking hassles and help preserve the environment."
What You Need to Know
The ferry is handicapped accessible.
The trip from Providence to Newport takes 65 minutes.
The fare is $14 one way or $28 round trip. Discounts are available for seniors and the disabled. Children under five ride free with an adult. Bring your bike for an additional $2 each way. Tickets are non-refundable.
Reservations are a good idea. Call 401-781-9400 to reserve your space on the ferry.
The ferry docks at Conley's Wharf/Providence Piers in Providence, located at 180 Allens Avenue. RIPTA offers a "Water Taxi" trolley from Kennedy Plaza 25 minutes prior to each ferry departure. RIPTA trolleys marked "Kennedy Plaza" meet the ferry at Conley's Wharf 10 minutes after the boat docks to take passengers to downtown Providence.
In Newport, the ferry docks at Perrotti Park on America's Cup Avenue. All-day parking is available at the Gateway Visitors Center for $2 with proof of RIPTA purchase.
In Newport, RIPTA buses and trolleys depart regularly from the Gateway Visitors Center, just a short walk from the ferry dock in Perrotti Park. RIPTA's environmentally friendly, vintage-style trolleys take passengers to the Bellevue Avenue mansions, the International Tennis Hall of Fame, the Cliff Walk and other attractions for $1.75 per ride. All-day trolley passes are $5 for an individual.

Departure Times from Providence to Newport:
8:30 a.m., 11:15 a.m., 2 p.m., 5:30 p.m., 8:30 p.m. - daily
