Did you know that Theodor Seuss Geisel, better known as Dr. Seuss, was a Springfield, Massachusetts, native? The beloved children's book author is celebrated at the Springfield Museums, where you'll find the Dr. Seuss National Memorial. Here are your New England Guide's favorite books by this imaginative and prolific writer.
1. "Gerald McBoing Boing"
As a child, I loved this story of Gerald McBoing Boing, who couldnt talk but could only make odd sounds. Dr. Seuss originally wrote the tale for an animated film, which won an Academy Award in 1951. The book version of the film was out of print for years, but, to my delight, it was reprinted in 2000, so I no longer have to rely on my fathers memory of the story he read to me as a tyke.2. "There's A Wocket in my Pocket"
This book is subtitled "Dr. Seuss's Book of Ridiculous Rhymes," and boy does that about capture it. This was one of my favorites when I was first learning to read. The illustrations of the fantastical creatures he describes give vivid life to these products of his very vivid imagination.
