We were among nearly 7,000 people who visited Roger Williams Park Zoo on New Year's Day, and while winter crowds aren't nearly as large when admission is charged, the zoo is an always popular Rhode Island family attraction, with an annual attendance approaching 600,000 visitors.

Although an announcement informed us it was still an hour until the zoo's winter closing time of 4 p.m., it was already past nap time, so we headed to the car for the trip home from Providence. We'll return again when the weather warms to explore more of the park that surrounds the zoo, including the carousel and other kids' rides, greenhouses and gardens, paddle boats, planetarium and Museum of Natural History.

Roger Williams Park Zoo is conveniently located at exit 17 from Route I-95 South or exit 16 from Route I-95 North, under an hour from Boston and just about 90 minutes from Hartford. For more information on Roger Williams Park Zoo including hours and admission fees, call 401-785-3510 or visit the zoo's Web site. Updates on the zoo's current $35 million capital improvement project are also available online.
