Water and fire--as elemental as earth and sky--are transformed into a transcendent work of beauty and a truly moving experience each time WaterFire is held in Providence, Rhode Island. In June 2010, during the WaterFire 15th anniversary season, I had the pleasure of meeting Barnaby Evans, the artist whose vision and energy continue to infuse an installation that has become an enduring symbol of Providence's rejuvenation and a source of community unity and pride. I also experienced WaterFire in a new way: from a boat!
I hope these WaterFire images inspire you to visit Providence on a WaterFire evening. Pictures only hint at the magic that awaits. WaterFire is not only one of New England's best free events, it is a feast for all of the senses that is utterly romantic and captivating.
