Fortunately for us, Mike had been out on the trail the day before with his snowmobile flattening out the trail leading from the Rosewood Country Inn to our ultimate destination, the Candlelite Inn. Most of the hike was on a closed segment of snowmobile trail through the woods of Bradford, atop perhaps four feet of semi-packed snow.

The trail was mostly wide and flat, but the few hills demonstrated the usefulness of the metal cleats that you'll find on the bottom of quality snowshoes: They keep you from slipping on the snow and unintentionally "glissading"--the highly technical term for smoothing down a hilly trail with your rear end.
