Cherished seasonal events that transpire over the course of several weeks or even months dominated the finalists for Best Event in the first New England Travel Readers' Choice Awards. All five of these annual happenings are worthy of your bucket list, but only one could run off with top honors.

1. ***Winner*** WaterFire

In a word, WaterFire is mesmerizing. Those who have experienced Providence, Rhode Island's signature event--which takes place on select evenings in the summer and fall--know that there is incredible power in the interplay of fire and water, as this art installation's 97 bonfires draw people from near and far to the city's riverbanks.

2. Salem Haunted Happenings

The witchy fun in Salem, Massachusetts, ramps up throughout the month of October, as this historic, coastal city hosts its annual assortment of Haunted Happenings. From ghost tours to costume balls, theatrical productions to a seance, there are otherworldly events galore to enjoy as Halloween creeps up.

3. Harvest on the Harbor

Although it is only four years old in 2012, Portland, Maine's annual celebration of the culinary arts already has a devout audience. Scheduled for October 25-27, 2012, Harvest on the Harbor's signature event is the Grand Tasting on the Harbor, which features the chance to meet top Maine chefs and to sample their tasty creations.

4. The Big E

The Big E in Springfield, Massachusetts, is the Northeast's largest fair, and 2012 marks its amazing 91st year! The 2012 Big E runs from September 14 through 30, and, as usual, there will be headline entertainment, carnival games and rides, foods and products from all six New England states, agricultural displays and a daily Mardi Gras Parade.

5. Vintage Christmas/Candlelight Stroll

Portsmouth, New Hampshire's old-fashioned holiday celebration draws visitors to this seaside city to enjoy a variety of nostalgic seasonal delights. The annual Candlelight Stroll at Strawbery Banke, New Hampshire's oldest neighborhood, is one of the traditional highlights, and tax-free holiday shopping at the city's eclectic, bedecked boutiques and stores adds to the allure.
