Fall Foliage Progression in Central Connecticut: 2011 Archive

By , About.com Guide

The 2011 fall foliage season in New England got off to an early start, seemed to pause for a while in October, and then came to a sudden, sad end when an unprecedented autumn Nor'easter mangled trees and leaves before October's end. For a look back at how the leaves changed week to week in 2011, click these links for photos of the view outside my window in central Connecticut.

The return of sunny days in the 60s makes it tough to believe we had snow a week ago... until you look around at the tree damage in my backyard. It's been an unusual fall foliage season, and as you examine this final photo of the view from my window, I hope you'll agree: Next year has to be better! My free e-course will help you plan a memorable 2012 autumn in New England trip.

The morning after more than a foot of snow fell in Connecticut, shattering the October snowfall record and causing widespread power outages and severe tree damage, the scene outside my window is shocking. When you see this photo of blue skies and blinding snow, you may find it lovely, but I'm not ashamed to admit: It nearly brought me to tears.

In all of my years of sharing photos of the fall foliage view outside my window, this is the first year I've had the displeasure of posting a photo of my backyard shrouded in snow. Here is the scene on Saturday eve... after we lost power but before we lost daylight.

What a sparkling afternoon! Even though many leaves have left their posts, there is a golden shimmer to my view that will carry me through the bleak winter days to come. I hope this look at the still-dazzling colors outside my window will inspire you to make the most of what remains of autumn.

The leaves are a bit past peak in my view this week. As you'll see, though, nature stubbornly refuses to relinquish its color, and it's hard not to admire the leaves that have hung on through rain and wind and dark, chilly nights.

Although it feels like summer again today, the colors of fall are suddenly coming on fast, and the view outside my window this week has a distinctly golden glow. As you appreciate the latest foliage changes, heed my warning: Foliage can be a serious driving distraction.

Mother Nature has hit the snooze button, it appears, and there's been little color change or leaf drop since last week. With sunshine and remarkably warm temperatures anticipated regionwide through the holiday weekend, it's going to be an ideal time to hit the road in New England to enjoy autumn's stunning landscapes.

Night is falling early, more leaves have fallen to the ground, and the view outside my window is more fall than summer for the first time this season. The colors are subtle—yet still beautiful—on this gray September day.

Summer warmth has returned, and it seems impossible the first day of fall will be here on Friday. Look closely at the latest view outside my window, and you'll see a sprinkling of orange amid the green.

There was a crisp coolness in the air as I walked my daughter to the school bus this morning. Even though temperatures reached the mid-80s here in central Connecticut today, there are definitely signs that fall is imminent, as you'll see in this first photo of the view outside my window for the 2011 foliage season. In my 13 years of sharing the view outside my window, this is the first year I've had to report on a hurricane's impact on the season. Fortunately, Irene's damage was localized, and there will still be plenty of opportunities to enjoy New England's fall splendor this year.
