New England Boiled Dinner Recipe

New England Boiled Dinner is a traditional one-pot meal that features cabbage and other vegetables and usually incorporates corned beef or pork shoulder. In this variation on the New England Boiled Dinner, a reader explains how she uses kielbasa as the main ingredient in this simple yet incredibly hearty dish.


  • 1 lb. kielbasa
  • 3 medium onions
  • 3 medium potatoes
  • 5 carrots
  • 1 head cabbage
  • butter
  • salt & pepper
  • vinegar (optional)


Peel and cut potatoes into medium-sized chunks. Peel onions. Peel carrots. Chop cabbage. Slice kielbasa into large chunks.

Bring water to a boil; add cabbage, carrots and onions. Bring to a second boil. Cook about 10 minutes, then add potatoes. Boil an additional 10 minutes. Add kielbasa, and boil 10 more minutes.

Drain well. Serve cabbage separately with vinegar, butter salt and pepper. Add butter, salt and pepper to carrots, onion and potatoes as desired. Enjoy.
