When the Obama family vacationed on Martha's Vineyard August 10-18, 2013, their famous family dog Bo went along. Martha's Vineyard may not be the first destination you think of when searching for places to travel with your dog in New England, but the island off the coast of Massachusetts is more dog-friendly than you may have imagined.

Dogs and other pets ride free aboard Steamship Authority ferries to Martha's Vineyard. One caveat: Unlike the leader of the free world, you will have to clean up after your own pup.

Oak Bluffs-based shop Good Dog Goods, which specializes in dog gear and gifts made in the USA, has helpful advice for dog owners on the Vineyard's most dog-friendly spots.
