Debby Fowles

Debby Fowles served as About.com's Guide to Portland and Southern Maine from 1998 through 2007.

Rockland, Maine, native Debby Fowles lived in the Maryland suburbs of Washington, DC, for many years before returning to her beloved home state in 1998. Shortly thereafter, she began sharing her travels and adventures and her insight into "Mainahs" and their way of life with an online audience as About.com's Guide to Portland and Southern Maine.

In 1999, Debby also became About.com's Financial Planning Guide. An experienced accountant and business consultant, Debby cherished the opportunities she had to connect with readers, to share down to earth advice, and to help those in need of financial guidance. Her online work led to realization of a lifelong dream to become a published author, and her two books—The Everything Personal Finance in Your 20s and 30s Book and 1000 Best Smart Money Secrets for Students--have helped many young people establish solid financial skills.

Debby remained devoted to her online audiences, even as she battled breast cancer. She died on February 23, 2007, after a long and courageous fight, but her spirit, sense of humor and passion for her work and for life remain an inspiration to those who knew and loved her.

Debby was not only my online colleague at About.com for nine years but my dear friend. We shared many memorable adventures, from our Maine Moose Safari to my lobster-themed wedding: Only a true friend would transport a 15-foot giant inflatable rental lobster from Maine to Connecticut! Debby's love for her native state was evident in every article she published, and I am delighted, through the generosity of her family, to be able to share with my readers some of her stories, recipes and photographs. I hope they inspire you to visit the beautiful state of Maine.
