10 Tips for Attending a Cirque du Soleil Performance of "OVO"

Things to Know Before You Go to the Hartford Show

By , About.com Guide

Planning to see Cirque du Soleil's "OVO" during its Hartford, Connecticut, run, June 17-July 11, 2010? Here are my 10 tips for attending a performance:

1. Good news--the Grand Chapiteau, a.k.a. the "big top," is climate-controlled.

2. Event parking is available right near the show's Market Street location, so arrive early and park close by. Event parking is $12.

3. We didn't get back to our car until after 10 p.m. following the 7:30 p.m. premiere, and regular evening shows don't begin until 8 p.m. If you're taking the kids, you might want to opt for an afternoon show.

4. You'll have to make two trips through the refreshment and souvenir tents on your way to and from the Grand Chapiteau. Be prepared if you don't intend to buy your little ones souvenirs, as the sparkly masks and other memorabilia are bound to inspire some pleading looks.

5. OVO programs are expensive. It's your money, but you really don't need a program to enjoy the performance.

6. The Tapis Rouge VIP experience is very pricey, but it does add to the show experience. VIPs have access to the chic, visually intriguing Tapis Rouge tent one hour before a performance and at intermission. VIP ticket holders receive free programs, and complimentary champagne, wine and appetizers are available prior to the show. The spread was ample enough to be dinner for me. At intermission, there's more champagne and wine, coffee, a few desserts and a very popular candy bar with takeout containers you can fill with treats to tide you through the second act. The Tapis Rouge also has separate restroom facilities with shorter lines.

7. Cameras are prohibited. You wouldn't want your flash to be responsible for upsetting "The Quest for Balance of the Spider," would you?

8. Cirque du Soleil isn't a circus in the traditional sense, and it probably won't appeal to children under the age of 5 or 6. I'm seriously considering taking my 7-year-old, though, as I think OVO would make an ideal first Cirque du Soleil show for her to see. It's colorful and has only one slightly scary moment, plus: What kid doesn't love bugs?

9. There is an intermission of about 30 minutes half-way through the show, right after the Flight of the Scarabs trapeze act. The restrooms are located outside the tent and to the rear of the complex. If you need to use one during intermission, you may want to make an early exit during the first half's final act, as the lines can get pretty long.

10. Tickets are still available for remaining performances, and when you order tickets online, you can visually select your exact seats. There isn't a bad seat in the Chapiteau, but for the very best vantage point, try for seats in front of the stage, rather than on the sides.
