Baby's First B&B

I had doubts as to whether the Captain Lindsey House, a B&B in Rockland, Maine, was a suitable place for my preschooler. As it turned out, she was well-behaved and perfectly welcome. My husband, on the other hand, may have to skip the next B&B trip.

My daughter had stayed in hotels and even a country inn and a rental farmhouse. But in September of 2006, I wasn't sure she was ready to conquer the final lodging frontier: baby's first B&B. She was, after all, not quite 4 years old, and the antique-filled Captain Lindsey House, an 1835 sea captain's home turned nine-room inn in Rockland, Maine, was no place for a preschooler, I thought.

Fortunately, the trip from Connecticut to Midcoast Maine affords hours of opportunity to counsel a preschooler as to how she should behave at a B&B. And when the innkeeper showed us she'd stocked the refrigerator with juice boxes and Uncrustables--those grab and go peanut butter and jelly sandwiches kids love--I began to think I'd perhaps been hasty in my assessment.

We had a hard time breaking one bit of news to our little one: she would be sleeping on a cot, not in the enormous bed, with its pillows that were larger than her! As a compromise, she and Daddy rested in the big bed, while I explored Rockland, then we all set out for a lobster boat tour. After that adventure, she could have slept anywhere.

And after all the time I'd spent worrying about baby's first night in a B&B, it was my HUSBAND who created a scene when he knocked a framed print off the stairwell wall with his duffle bag as we ascended to our room for the evening. You should have heard the crash! Other guests compared it to a chandelier shattering. And even though my daughter's little hand was grasped firmly in mine, it took a few minutes for me to fully register the fact that I'd lectured the wrong family member.
