Look closely at the deepest part of my plot of land, and you'll see that a touch of orange has appeared in my view this week. Last night, I climbed out of bed twice: first, to fetch a wool blanket from my cedar chest, then, to reluctantly fire up my furnace. Cold nights mean leaf change may accelerate, but for now, full-blown fall is holding off a bit, and we are enjoying some of the most splendid autumn days in Connecticut that I can ever recall. My neighbor, who spends most of his time in Vermont, says the leaves up there are taking their sweet time, too.
