Michele Musto, curator of the exhibit, told me that it was a challenge to select the items to feature in the show from the 2,000 or so pieces of clothing owned by Doris Duke at the time of her death. The fashions on exhibit were selected to shed light on the personality, interests and sense of style of this intensely private woman who nevertheless captured the public's imagination.
Musto said her favorite piece is a green jacket by Mariano Fortuny, which she described as "a work of art." Visitors have an opportunity to see everything from bathing suits and kimonos for lounging around the house to designer gowns and suits by Balenciaga, Madame Grès, Yves Saint Laurent, Tina Leser and Emilio Ungaro. Accessories--hats, shoes, purses--are also included in the exhibit.
