Obtain a Connecticut Marriage License

By , About.com Guide

Congratulations! You're getting married. If the ceremony will take place in Connecticut, here's how to obtain the proper marriage license.
Difficulty: Easy
Time Required: 20 minutes

Here's How:

  1. The legal age for marriage in Connecticut is 18. If you are under the age of 18, parental consent is required. A person under the age of 16 may not marry unless the judge of probate for the district in which the minor resides endorses his written consent on the license.
  2. A marriage license can often be obtained the same day, but check local requirements.
  3. Both parties must appear in person with photo identification and social security card or passport at the town or city office (often the town clerk) responsible for marriage licenses in the municipality in which the ceremony will take place or in the city or town where either person to be joined in marriage resides.
  4. Bring with you: date of the marriage; name, address, and telephone number for each individual; $30 for the Marriage License; parents' names (including mothers' maiden names) and places of birth.
  5. The marriage license is valid for 65 days. There is no required waiting period between the time of issuance of the license and the date of the ceremony.
  6. The fee for a marriage license is $30.

Tips:

  1. Connecticut law specifies that no man may marry his mother, grandmother, daughter, granddaughter, sister, aunt, niece, stepmother or stepdaughter, and no woman may marry her father, grandfather, son, grandson, brother, uncle, nephew, stepfather or stepson. Any marriage within these degrees is void.
  2. Connecticut no longer requires a Premarital Blood Test for a marriage license. The blood test requirement was repealed as of October 1, 2003.
  3. For the City of Hartford, Marriage Licenses are issued by the Bureau of Vital Records, Municipal Building, 550 Main Street, Hartford, CT 06103, (860) 543-8539.
