Gracious accommodations await visitors to Block Island. The tiny, 10-square-mile isle off the coast of Rhode Island is known for its sprawling Victorian hotels overlooking the sea. These grand hotels were built during the late 19th century as tourists first discovered the charms of this secluded island, lauded for the beauty of its preserved natural landscapes.
Here is your guide to Block Island hotels. There are no chain hotels on Block Island: Each lodging property offers a truly unique accommodations experience. Keep in mind that many hotels close during the winter months.
Spring House Hotel
The Spring House isn't just a hotel--it's an island landmark. Block Island's oldest and largest hotel has served as an elegant retreat for luminaries from Mark Twain to Billy Joel. The Victorian hotel's main building, with its oceanview, wrap-around porch, has 39 guest rooms and suites. An additional 11 rooms are located in the nearby Samuel Mott Building. The Spring House Hotel is open May through mid-October.
The National Hotel
Built circa 1888, the National Hotel lords over Water Street, just a short stroll from Block Island's Old Harbor ferry dock. This 45-room Victorian hotel, listed on the National Register of Historic Places, is best known for its expansive porch: an ideal spot for drinks, dinner or people-watching. The National Hotel is open from early May through mid-October.
The 1661 Inn and Hotel Manisses
The 17-room Hotel Manisses, a Victorian gem, is the centerpiece of this collection of accommodations properties, which also includes the nine-room 1661 Inn and several private cottages. While the Hotel Manisses is open seasonally and only accommodates children over the age of 12, the 1661 Inn is open year-round and welcomes children of all ages.
