2000 Snowmen!
Maine Town Goes for
Another World Record

Dateline: 12/16/99

What does the town that created the World's Tallest Snowman in 1999 do to top that in the Year 2000? Build 2000 snowmen, of course!

Bethel, Maine, made a name for itself when it landed in the Guinness Book of Records last year with Angus the 114-foot tall snowman, named after Maine governor Angus King. This year, the spot where the towering snowman stood and locations throughout the town will be graced with hundreds of smaller snowguys--the town is hoping for 2000 frozen creations in all!

Area residents and visitors, too, are invited to build a snowman. Snowman registration forms can be obtained by contacting the Bethel Area Chamber of Commerce, P.O. Box 1247, Bethel, Maine 04217, (207) 824-2282. Entries and a $2 entry fee must be received by the chamber by February 12 if you'd like to participate. Prizes in several categories, including most original, best dressed, and most like Angus, will be awarded February 19 at the Angus Memorial Celebration.

Special Events Director Paul Wheeler says in a press release announcing the town's newest quest, "We hope to have 2000 registered snowmen in Bethel, and Guinness may create another category."

Located in western Maine, Bethel is not only popular with snowman builders--it's a draw for downhill and cross-country skiers, snowboarders, and snowmobilers. Area resorts include Sunday River, Mt. Abram, and Carter's Cross-Country Ski Center.

If you go... This map from Yahoo! Maps will help you find your way to Bethel, Maine, and the Bethel Area Chamber of Commerce has information online on where to stay, where to eat, and what to do.

If you can't make it to Bethel... you can still shop for snowman souvenirs online!

For the kids... About.com's own Kids' Exchange Guide Wendy Hogan shows kids how to make a silly little bag of snowman poop for their friends using mini-marshmallows! Now I've seen everything!
