Party Like It's 1773
Dateline: 12/03/98
Updated: 12/01/99
According to the Countdown to the Millennium Calendar that my friend Karin gave me for Christmas two years ago, we've got just 31 days until we exit the 1900s, but if you're already wondering if you'll have the stamina to survive all of those end-of-the-century parties and you don't exactly have the Artist formerly known as Prince's moves, then perhaps partying like it's 1773 is more your cup of tea. Cup of tea? <<hint hint>> YES! You're invited to party with the Patriots formerly known as John Adams, John Hancock, and Paul Revere at a Boston Tea Party reenactment at 5:30 p.m. on Sunday, December 12.
The evening kicks off at 5:30 p.m. at the Old South Meeting House, the landmark spot where Patriot extraordinaire Samuel Adams gave the secret signal to head for the Harbor, where he and his buddies, disguised as Native Americans, proceeded to dump 342 chests of English tea into the salty Atlantic. More than any other single event, this one may have been the fine brew that got us into the American Revolution.
This year marks the 226th anniversary of that historic night when our American founders took a stand against taxation of their favorite beverage, and against colonial rule as a whole. So, be one of the first 600 people at the Old South Meeting House on December 12, and you can be a part of the special reenactment of the event beginning at 5:30 p.m. Then, you'll parade with the costumed Patriots from the Old South Meeting House to Boston Harbor to the Boston Tea Party Ship, a museum replica of the original, for the reenactment of the tossing of the tea.
