The Wild Blueberry: Maine's Native Berry

"Because they have both sweet and tart tastes, they're different from the big ones," Debby Fowles, About.com's Guide to Southern Maine, said. She was speaking of blueberries of course--specifically the wild Maine blueberries that went into the delectable Maine Wild Blueberry Streusel Coffeecake that she made for breakfast on a Saturday morning.

In 1999, I was Debby's first houseguest in her new Midcoast Maine home, and I not only got my first glimpse of the house that she'd built but also my very first taste of the unique fruit so coveted by Mainers. "It's a wonder they even survive in a container because they are so fragile, so little," Debby said in describing the blueberries. "The blueberry crop was early this year," she added, explaining that the dry weather conditions affected the crop. Luckily, she had a batch frozen to use for the coffeecake recipe, which balanced the slight tartness of the blueberries with a sugary, crunchy topping.

You'll find Debby's recipe available here:

Though you can certainly make this recipe with traditional blueberries, Debby also points you to Wyman's for mail ordering frozen or canned Maine wild blueberries that will be perfect for this recipe. Call them toll-free at 800 341-1758.

Enjoy!
