About

In 1906, the $1 million Rockingham Park thoroughbred horse track in Salem,
New Hampshire, opened its doors to 10,000 fans who came by train from Boston,
Rhode Island, and New York City. Then, it closed down for 25 years. You see,
gambling on horseracing was illegal in New Hampshire.
Luckily, there's no danger of betting on horse races being declared illegal in the Live Free or Die state these days, and this historic racetrack is a wonderful place to while away a New England afternoon wagering on the ponies. It's located just a half hour north of Boston at I-93 Exit 1.
From
June through September, Rockingham Park offers a busy schedule of live
thoroughbred racing.
Year-round, the track offers Full Card Simulcasting
every day and evening, so you can watch and bet on the races at all of the major
tracks in the U.S. The track also hosts a variety of special
events throughout the year including car shows, craft shows, computer shows,
and more. Plus, there's Bingo
six nights a week, and regularly weekly promotions
including the famous Seafood Buffet on Fridays, Saturday Budweiser Barbecues, and Sunday
Coca-Cola Family Days.
The highlight of my last trip to the track was being able to bet on a horse named "Email Me." And while I may not have won a bundle, I did get close enough to the action from my seat in the grandstand to get some terrific photos in spite of the drizzly weather.
For post times and group tour information, call Rockingham Park at (603) 898-2311. If you plan a group outing, you can even have a special race named after your group!
