Mansion is Ideal Setting for Annual Newport Flower Show--Come Along on a Virtual Tour |
||||||||||||||||||||
Close your eyes for a moment and envision the perfect setting for a flower show. Did you see an extravagant, historic mansion filled with dramatic, towering floral arrangements? Or perhaps a green and sprawling lawn dotted with crisp white tents that look like billowing sails against the backdrop of churning blue ocean below? If you did, then perhaps you've been to the Newport Flower Show at Rosecliff mansion. If not, then you may need to come along on my virtual tour of the sixth annual floral and horticultural extravaganza to be fully convinced that this is, indeed, the most ideal backdrop for a lavish display of dazzling blooms. The 2001 Newport Flower Show was held on July 7 and 8, but I'll actually take you to the exclusive Preview Party held July 6 for a peek at what you missed. The theme for this year's show was "A New Beginning," inspired by the restoration of the Sunken Garden at the Elms, which has been made possible by monies raised from the Newport Flower Show over the past six years. The Elms and Rosecliff are two of the 11 historic properties and landscapes maintained and operated by the Preservation Society of Newport County. The Newport Flower Show was named one of North America's Top 100 Events for 2001 by the American Bus Association. Annually, the Newport Flower Show brings together stunning, judged flower arrangements; a horticulture tent filled with plants and flowers in a variety of entry categories; an extensive, outdoor garden marketplace that draws vendors from across the country; garden workshops and lectures; and a variety of special events including the Preview Party.
For information on how you can attend the next Newport Flower Show, call (401) 847-1000, ext. 150, or email: events@NewportMansions.org. Ready to go? Rosecliff and the floral spendor of the Newport Flower Show are just a click away. |

Tickets
for the Preview Party are pricey--but in addition to supporting the work of the
Preservation Society, they also admit garden enthusiasts to an evening of
cocktails and wine, live music, sumptuous food prepared by a variety of top
Newport restaurants, a sneak preview of the exhibits and prize winners, and the
best opportunity of the year to "be seen" wearing a fabulous, floral
hat. We'll see several of the fascinating headgear creations donned by
