Tickets On Sale for John Singer Sargent Show
at Boston's Museum of Fine Arts

Dateline: 05/23/99

Tickets went on sale today for an exhibition of more than 140 works by American painter John Singer Sargent (1856-1925), which will run June 27 through September 26 at the Museum of Fine Arts in Boston. The exhibition includes works from both Sargent's American and European careers and his famed murals of mythological gods and heroes, which will be on view in the museum's upper rotunda stairwell. In a sense, the show marks a return to Sargent's roots--the painter considered Boston his American home, and his first solo show was held in Boston in 1888.

Key works in the exhibition include portraits of Robert Louis Stevenson, Henry James, John D. Rockefeller, and Madame Gautreau, the mysterious subject of Sargent's Madame X. Sargent's painting of his friend Claude Monet, Claude Monet Painting at the Edge of a Wood, will also be in the show. The complete catalog is available for purchase at a discount from Borders.com.

A number of special events are planned in conjunction with the exhibit including day and evening weekday lectures, free Sunday lectures, and free introductory talks on Sundays. In addition, there will be a June 25 Symposium, Public Art for Boston: John Singer Sargent's Mural Projects, held at Sackler Lecture Hall at Harvard University. Admission is free, and advance registration is not required. For more information about the symposium, call (617) 495-4544.

In addition, Boston will celebrate a "Sargent Summer," giving visitors many other opportunities to see Sargent works in the area, including murals at Harvard and the Boston Public Library, an exhibit titled Sargent in the Studio: Drawings, Sketchbooks, and Oil Sketches at Harvard's Fogg Art Museum June 10 through September 5, and exhibit at the Boston Athenaeum of portraits by Sargent and his contemporaries, and a show titled Sargent: The Late Landscapes, which runs May 21 through September 26 at the Isabella Stewart Gardner Museum.
