Rating: Four Gold Leaves. Very good.

Gramercy Bistro is an outstanding little restaurant (30 seats) located in the up-and-coming arts community of North Adams, Massachusetts. The food is excellent and creatively prepared with Asian and French influences and eclectic flavor combinations depending on available ingredients and time of year. Maryland Crab Cakes drizzled with Horseradish Dressing and Seared Sesame Tuna served with pickled ginger and Wasabi are my all-time favorites.

The chef-owner supports local farmers using organic, farm-raised meats and locally grown produce and changes his menu seasonally. The bistro features full bar service
and an exceptional wine list with more than 100 excellent wines from around the world, including several offered by the glass. A bottle of Shooting Star Syrah is a strong recommendation.

Gramercy Bistro's ceilings are high and crossed by heavy, dark wooden beams with ceiling fans turning slowly overhead. An intimate bar with swivel stools overlooks the kitchen, and rose-tinted walls are currently decorated with a handful of works by New Orleans master printmaker Brandon Graving. (Art changes a few times a year.)

Service is swift and friendly. Water glasses, as well as the all-important wine glass, are filled regularly. Dinner accompanied by a good bottle of wine is a very reasonable $30 per person (not including gratuity).

In the 1990s, chef-owner Alexander "Sandy" Smith owned and operated several northern Berkshires favorites including Cobble Café, Mezze and Wild Amber Grill before starting Gramercy Bistro in 2001.

Located across from the MASS MoCA campus, Gramercy serves dinner six nights a week from Wednesday through Monday beginning at 5 p.m. and brunch from 10 a.m. until 2 p.m. on Sundays. The restaurant is closed Tuesdays. All major credit cards are accepted and reservations are appreciated.
