Autumnal Tints

Picture of Brilliant Fall Foliage Beside Walden Pond

Henry David Thoreau's book, "Walden," was not the only work inspired by his time on Walden Pond. In an essay titled "Autumnal Tints," Thoreau wrote: "October is the month for painted leaves. Their rich glow now flashes round the world. As fruits and leaves and the day itself acquire a bright tint just before they fall, so the year near its setting. October is its sunset sky; November the later twilight." This picture of brilliant fall foliage alongside Walden Pond was taken on a perfect October day a mere 141 years after those words by Thoreau were first published in the "Atlantic Monthly."
