As we head back toward The Center Village at Old Sturbridge Village, we pop in on the shoemaker, who is hard at work but still willing to chat about his craft. Shoe production boomed in New England in the first half of the 19th century, with many pairs made for distant markets, not just local needs. In fact, after farming, the textile and shoemaking industries employed the most New Englanders during this era.
