Maine Moose Safari: A Photojournal
Dateline: 06/23/99
- Scene 5 -Dale took us on a long hike under the now blazing sun to a remote pond, where he said we would surely see moose... No moose! But... we did get to see a young band of gentlemen who were just finishing a complete tour of the Appalachian Trail, which began in Georgia and lasted several months! (Can you say facial hair?) We crawled back into the air-conditioned van, dehydrated and weary, and no sooner did we hit the road again before we came across...

| A moose!
A cow moose this time--off in the swampy distance--too far and mucky a hike to get snout-to-snout. (She's right in the middle of the above photo. You'll see her if you stare for a while!) Dale wanted to take another hike to a spot where he'd seen moose many times, but when we'd finally reached the tranquil spot... No moose!

| But... I did get this wonderfully peaceful shot of Mt. Katahdin reflecting in the stillness of the pond. Dale told us that Katahdin is home to the Pamola Caves, which are icy year round. Indians believed that great spirits inhabited Katahdin, including the god, Pamola, who had the torso of a man; the wings, beak, and talons of an eagle; and the head of a moose! I'm glad that we only ran into creatures that had moose heads on gangly moose bodies! Photos by Kim Knox, 1998. <<< Go Back |
