Maine Moose Safari: A Photojournal
Dateline: 06/23/99
- Scene 4 -I was content as I munched my sandwich, knowing that I could at least go home now and not have to face the teasing of friends and family. I'd boasted for weeks of my impending moose-stalking adventure, and surely they would've ribbed me to no end if my "Big Beast Weekend" had yielded zero photo opportunities. And yet, I still hoped to come snout-to-snout with another moose before the day's end. After lunch, we headed for Baxter State Park as quintessential outdoorsman Dale told us about all of the times he'd seen moose--including the time he'd seen five moose and two deer at a pond. "That was probably the most I've seen in one place," he said. Baxter State Park is 200,000 acres and is the northern starting point for the Appalachian Trail, which runs south to Georgia, 2,160 miles along the East Coast. It's also home to Maine's tallest peak, majestic Mt. Katahdin.

watch whitewater rafters fighting the rushing water, a beautiful, scenic spot with Mt. Katahdin looming in the background.
