Maine Moose Safari: A Photojournal
Dateline: 06/23/99
- Scene 3 - |
After we'd had our fill of watching the
rafters and found some not-too- primitive
"facilities," we spent about an hour slowly cruising the dirt roads that Dale
knew so well in search of our prey. We stared fixedly, watching for signs of any moose
movement. We
repositioned Chocolate our Beanie Baby mascot on the dashboard several times, hoping he'd
point us to his larger, living brethren. Finally, as noon approached and my stomach started to signal its agitation that it hadn't been fed since we left Yarmouth very early that morning, I insisted that it was time to call a temporary halt to our expedition and pull over for lunch.

| "Boy, that girl is really hungry," Dale thought,
until he turned back around just as I was finally able to stammer... "M... m...
Moose!" A giant (okay--giant to me, Dale said he was pretty average) bull moose had leapt from the woods into the road in front of the van just as Dale began to park. We all hopped out of the van and set off after him, but alas, it was harder than finding Waldo to spot the startled moose, who hid in the dense vegetation.
Look carefully... he's in there. Really! I swear! Here... let me see if I can help you find him. Or, you can just take my word for it!

Debby
requested a shady spot, so as soon as Dale spied one, he pulled over,
looked over his shoulder, and backed
the van into it. Debby was watching behind us from the back seat, too.
Needless to say, both
were startled out of their seats when I began clapping and squealing!!
