ghlookbk.jpg (50226 bytes)Looking back up the hill at The Grey Havens Inn, it's evident that many of the 14 guest rooms have wonderful ocean views. There are even four rooms in the circular turret that provide spectacular 180-degree views of the ocean. The inn's rates start at $100 per night for two people including a continental breakfast. There is a two-night minimum on weekends.

ghsittingrm.jpg (35583 bytes)As difficult as it was to leave behind the peace and tranquility of the inn's gracious porch, I did venture inside to get a feel for the accommodations. It was obviously checkout time, and a number of people who had been at the inn for a wedding were departing, so I didn't ask to see a guest room. However, I did get to explore the "lounge" with its stone fireplace, reading and conversation nooks and crannies, and shelves of books and games.

ghdr.jpg (41399 bytes)I also scouted out the warm, cozy dining room, where guests are served a simple, fresh breakfast each morning. According to the inn's brochure, "No one cares if you come down for a breakfast tray in your robe or talk all night (quietly) in the lounge."

ghchair.jpg (37194 bytes)Grey Havens bills itself as "an easy-going, unpretentious place." It's a great home base from which to explore the attractions of midcoast Maine-- the shops of Wiscasset, the Maine Maritime Museum, L.L. Bean's flagship store in Freeport, museums at Bowdoin College.

And even if you never venture further away than the island sanctuary that is so invitingly close (Grey Havens has its own dock and will loan you a rowboat), rocking away a few hours on the porch entranced in the view will take you worlds away.
