Question 7 - July 13, 1999

Who better to ask than a New Englander...? I need to order lobster, chowder and clams for a family reunion in August for about 50 adults. The reunion will be in western NY, so we want to fly them in fresh. Can you recommend anyone with tasty lobster and delicious chowder who can do this?

Thanks in advance.

- Cathy K.

Answer from Kim Knox,
About.com Guide to New England for Visitors:

Hi Cathy!

Let's see... I'm going to point you in a few different directions. :-)

I've never actually ordered lobster to be delivered, as, living in New England, it's quite easy for me to get it fresh. I'd say that Maine lobsters are probably the most sought-after. You'll find links to more than a dozen places to order lobster online on my site at: http://gonewengland.about.com/msublob.htm

The only company that I've had direct dealings with was The Lobster Net, who I actually dealt with when I was writing an article about where to order clam chowder online.

As for ordering fresh clams, Ipswich clams from Massachusetts are really famous for being the region's best. I answered another reader's question recently about buying friend clams online, and you'll find that you can order other clam products from the same vendors I recommended to him, including Ipswich Shellfish.

Cathy, I hope that's helpful. Sounds like a great party!

All best wishes,
Kim Knox
