New England Q&A Archive
Question 5 - June 23, 1999
My husband and I are planning to take a trip to Maine in August. We don't know
where to begin. We are an active couple in our late 20s and enjoy sightseeing, hiking, and
the beach. We don't know what town to stay in, so we would love some suggestions from you.
We live in New York City and will be driving up to Maine via Rhode Island. We plan to stay
in Newport for one night and would like to stay in Maine for two or three nights. Should
we stay in a resort or in a B&B? We would like to spend about $100 to $120 dollars per
night.
Thanks so much for your help. Your Web site is great, and I plan to use it for more
suggestions, but I feel overwhelmed at this point.

Answer from Kim Knox,
About.com Guide to New England for Visitors:
Dear Jennifer,
Thank you for writing!
Here are some ideas of where you might "begin" to plan your trip to Maine.
Please don't hesitate to write to me again as you narrow down the type of vacation you're
looking for if you need additional suggestions.
Under my New England Freebies links,
you'll find a direct link to request brochures from the Maine Office of Tourism. This is a
great first step and will help you to select a destination within Maine that'll have most
of what you're looking for. You may also want to follow the link to request the free New
Hampshire vacation kit as well. Portsmouth, New Hampshire, is a lovely town and would give
you a nice home base from which to explore southern Maine's outlet shops and
seaside towns as well.
My Maine sightseeing links may
also help you to narrow down which part of the state is most attractive to you.
Once you've got a good handle on where you'd like to stay, I've got links to all variety
of Maine accommodations.
The wonderful thing about the Internet is that you can easily "preview"
accommodations--most lodging Web sites have wonderful photographs.
If you are looking for truly extraordinary lodging, I'd recommend the award-winning Inn at Moosehead Lake.
Some people love B&Bs, and some hate them. It really depends on your personality and
the level of privacy you are seeking vs. the level of "charm."
The Captain Lord Mansion in
Kennebunkport might be one for you to consider. Kennebunkport is where George Bush's
summer home is, and with his son campaigning, there's quite a tourist crowd
there. There are lovely shops to explore, whale watching and lobstering cruises, etc.
If you're REALLY looking for a once in a lifetime adventure that'll make you forget the
big city, I can highly recommend the scenic moose photo tours offered by Maine-ly Photos.
You can read about MY Maine
Moose Safari before you go.
Jennifer, I hope that helps to get you started. :-)
All best wishes as you plan your trip,
Kim Knox
