Question 44 - September 7, 2000
Hi,
I am trying to plan a trip from Providence to Portland, Maine, that is very limited in number of days. We have
one day in Providence, one day from Providence to NH, and one day to get to Maine.
Is there any site or help out there that works like MapQuest and gives me the best scenic drive but is
also taking into account the length of time available?
Thanks
- Toska
Answer from Kim Knox,
About.com Guide to New England for Visitors:
Dear Toska,
I'm afraid I don't know of any online "scenic route" planners similar to MapQuest. With your limited travel
time, you may find that you'll want to use MapQuest or a similar program to map your most direct route, and
then figure out the half-way point perhaps to take a scenic drive off the main highways for lunch. Or plan to
make good time reaching your destination and then to spend some time driving the country roads once
you've arrived. Keep in mind that fall is New England's busiest season, so you'll find heavier than normal traffic to
contend with that may slow you down, particularly on weekends. Because everyone is "leaf peeping,"
too, the traffic tends to move more slowly, and you have to watch out a bit for erratic drivers. :-)
Not knowing your destinations in New Hampshire or Maine, it's difficult for me to make any more specific
suggestions. However, as you plan your trip, feel free to post to the New England Forum any questions or
requests for suggestions that you may have. You'll need to create a user name and password for yourself the first
time you visit in order to post.
All best wishes,
Kim Knox
