Question 38 - May 16, 2000
I am heading up to Newport, Rhode Island, from New Jersey for a weekend in August,
and I was wondering if you could recommend somewhere to stay within 30-45 minutes of Newport for
one night? We would like a place near the beach with some night life. Thank you.

Answer from Kim Knox,

Hi Monica,
If you're only going to be in Rhode Island for one night, I'd recommend that you stay right IN
Newport, unless you're going to be there on an evening when they are holding a Waterfire event
in Providence, which you wouldn't want to miss! I know that there are several dates in August--it's a magical evening of bonfires burning on the river, really something
special.
In Newport, you have options for B&Bs--the George Champlin Mason House is one of my favorites
(see: http://gonewengland.about.com/msubbbri.htm) or classic older style hotels such as the Hotel
Viking (see: http://gonewengland.about.com/msubinnri.htm) and there are even chain hotels... there's
a lovely Marriott Courtyard that's a short drive from all of the restaurants, etc. in Newport.
I hope that helps to get you started. Please do not hesitate to post any additional questions you might
have on the New England Forum--you can enter as

you'd like to post. You'll get recommendations from a variety of sources if you post your questions
there.
All best wishes,
Kim Knox
