New England Q&A Archive

Question 37 - May 12, 2000

My husband was stationed in Rockland, Maine, in 1975/76 and we lived in Camden, the most beautiful town in the world! The Coast Guard paid leased housing for the apartment we found up on Matthew John Avenue, with a view of Mt. Batty from my kitchen window. I was also fortunate enough to work in Town Office for a year before we were transferred to New Haven, CT. I was lucky enough to do a lot of work in the town vault, which was researching old town ordinances that outlived their usefulness.

We want to drive back to Rockland, Camden in the next year. We now live in Wilmington, NC, again along the sea, but the destination of all the hurricanes for the past couple of years! We are fine and thriving, and want to know if you can provide any new information on Camden. When I left, Elmer Savage was the Town manager, and there was a local moose trotting down Mountain Street on a regular basis!

Thanks for your help. And your Web site. It makes me happy!
Regards. -Carol C.

Answer from Kim Knox,
About.com Guide to New England for Visitors:

Dear Carol,

Thank you so much for your kind words about my Web site! How delightful that you'll have an opportunity to return to Camden for a visit this year.

Did you know that the Camden Herald newspaper is online? The site is not extensive, but you can read top local stories there.

The Camden-Rockport-Lincolnville Chamber of Commerce has a nice site. It may help you to get a sense of how Camden has changed since you were last there, what new businesses are in town, etc.

As for the Town Manager, it's now someone named Roger Moody. You can read all about what's up with local government at the official Camden, Maine, Town Office Web site.

I hope those links are useful!  And do let me know how your trip was after your visit to Maine.

All best wishes,
Kim Knox
