New England Q&A Archive

Question 30 - January 7, 2000

I have overseas visitors here for about a week. One of them has a romantic notion about 'classic' New England villages and would like to visit several. Perhaps, two or three days in midweek. We would be limited, on the basis of driving-time, to western Connecticut and western Massachusetts. I am familiar with Litchfield, Kent areas but can't think of even more 'classic' places. Can you help? Have spent about five hours on the Net but failed to find exactly what I need in the way of info.

Thanks!
Gene H.

Answer from Kim Knox,
About.com Guide to New England for Visitors:

Hi Gene -

Well, the first place that comes immediately to mind is Stockbridge, Massachusetts, where you can dine at the Red Lion Inn, immortalized by Norman Rockwell in his painting, "Main Street, Stockbridge." Five of our presidents have stayed there. :-) It's definitely a classic. There's quaint shopping in Stockbridge, plus the Norman Rockwell Museum is a must-see. You'll find more information about visiting Stockbridge at the Chamber of Commerce Web site.

It's a bit more of a drive, but Bennington, Vermont, just across the Massachusetts border would also be a good choice. I've got an article about all there is to do in Bennington that might give you some ideas.

Hope that helps! Let me know if you still need other ideas.

All best wishes,
Kim Knox
