New England Q&A Archive
Question 24 - November 1, 1999
My wife and I are tentatively planning a trip to the New England area next fall to view the fall foliage. Is there a particular city that would be a good base from which we could perhaps drive to other locations? We would want to fly to some city, rent a car, and go from there. Any suggestions would be appreciated.
Thank you very much,
-Don W.
Answer from Kim Knox,
About.com Guide to New England for Visitors:
Dear Don,
I'll point you to a number of resources at my New England for Visitors site that will help
you to plan your trip, and please feel free to write to me again if you have other
specific questions.
A good starting point is my New England Foliage
Central. There you will find resources including:
Lodgings for Leaf
Peepers
Leaf Alert
Choosing your "home base" should be partially dependent on exactly when you plan
to visit. You can check the Leaf Alert page to see how the foliage changes timed out this
year. Mother Nature is VERY hard to predict, but in general, the more northern areas of
New England tend to
peak earlier. For example, if you are planning your New England visit for the end of
September, Maine and northern Vermont and New Hampshire may be the only places where
you're likely to see color at all.
The other thing to keep in mind is that inns in New England book well in advance for peak
foliage weeks, so you'll want to make reservations as soon as you can once you find a spot
that is appealing.
If you are flying in to New England, your arrival city will depend a lot on where you are
coming from. Boston obviously has the most inbound flights, and Boston is a great city and
would make a good central hub. However, it is very, very expensive. Other options might be
Bradley Airport in Connecticut, Manchester Airport in New Hampshire, T.F. Green Airport in
Providence, Rhode Island, or even the NYC airports if you are planning to visit in the
later part of the season.
Again, once you've had a chance to explore the resources available at my Web site, feel
free to write again with specific questions.
All best wishes as you plan your trip,
Kim Knox
