New England Q&A Archive

Question 23 - November 1, 1999

Hi. I am trying to plan a weekend trip for my girlfriend's birthday. She lives in Boston, and I was wondering if there were any areas that would be particularly nice to visit in late November.

Thanks.

Hi Kevin!

Not knowing your interests or how far you're willing to travel, it's a bit tough for me to make a recommendation, but one of MY favorite places in New England at the end of November is Newport, Rhode Island. After Thanksgiving, the mansions are decorated for the holidays and are simply spectacular! Also, the rates at some of the nicest B&Bs are reasonable as it is the "off season," and restaurants, etc., aren't nearly as crowded as in the summertime.

The last time I visited Newport, I stayed at a lovely B&B called the George Champlin Mason House. You'll find it included in my Rhode Island B&B listings.

Though I haven't updated it yet for 1999, my article "Mansions Aglow" should give you a preview of what it's like in Newport at this time of year. Again, keep in mind that this is last year's information.

Hope this at least gives you some ideas. Please feel free to write again if I can provide you with any further assistance.

All best wishes,
Kim Knox
