New England Q&A Archive

Question 17 - September 13, 1999

Am headed to Nantucket on October 1st through the 3rd.... I know of the Steamship Authority ferry out of Hyannis to the island but had thought that there was a ferry going out of Woods Hole or Falmouth for Nantucket. Thought it was the Cape and Island line or something like that!

We were trying to find a late morning ferry... the only we saw was one at 9:15 a.m. and the next one was at 1 p.m... as we are a 5-hour drive from the Cape. Hope you can help. Also, where does one park (for cheap)? I have info on the Authority line parking at $8 per day... but there HAS to be other parking availible for less? Especially after the so-called season.

Thanks.
Lucia

Answer from Kim Knox,
About.com Guide to New England for Visitors:

Hello, Lucia!

Here is the information I have for Nantucket ferries--you'll need to call the individual services to check on schedules and availability, costs, and parking.

The Steamship Authority (tel. (508) 477-8600) provides the only vehicular access to Nantucket and Martha’s Vineyard. If you plan to take your car to either island, reservations well in advance are a must, as space is very limited. Ferries depart from Hyannis for Nantucket Island and from Woods Hole for either Oak Bluffs (seasonal) or Vineyard Haven on Martha’s Vineyard. Other year-round ferry passenger services are provided by Cuttyhunk Boat Lines (tel. (508) 992-1432), which connects New Bedford and Cuttyhunk, and Hy-Line (tel. (508) 778-0404), which has high-speed catamaran passenger service between Hyannis and Nantucket Island. Seasonal ferry service is provided by: Bay State Cruise Company (tel. (617) 723-7800) connecting Boston with Provincetown, Cape Cod Cruises (tel. (508) 747-2400) connecting Plymouth and Provincetown, Cape Island Express (tel. (508) 997-1688) connecting New Bedford with Vineyard Haven, Capt. John Boars (tel. (508) 746-2643) connecting Plymouth and Provincetown, Falmouth-Edgartown Ferry (tel. (508) 548-9400) running between Falmouth and Edgartown on Martha’s Vineyard, Freedom Cruise Line (tel. (508) 432-8999) connecting Harwich Port and Nantucket Island, Hy-Line (tel. (508) 778-2600) connecting Hyannis and both Martha’s Vineyard and Nantucket, Island Queen (tel. (508) 548-4800) running between Falmouth and Martha’s Vineyard and The Yankee Fleet (tel. 800 WHALING) connecting Gloucester and Nantucket Island.

Unfortunately, if you plan to take your car to Nantucket, you really only have the one option. The Steamship Authority's Web site is at: http://www.islandferry.com/ if you need additional information about their ferry services.

Hope this is helpful. Have a wonderful trip!

All best wishes,
Kim Knox
