New England Q&A Archive
Question 11 - August 8, 1999
Hi, my husband and I are planning a trip to Boston on Thursday, September 16 through Monday, September 21 from Texas. We have seen Boston and loved it; however, we are interested in seeing some fall foliage. We won't be able to see the foliage except on Friday, Saturday, and Sunday. Will we have time to go into Maine and NH and still see some of Boston? How could I get car route for us to follow so that we can conduct the tour ourselves from a rental car?
Thank you.
D'anne M.
Answer from Kim Knox,
About.com Guide to New England for Visitors:
Dear D'anne,
Unfortunately, you are not likely to see much for fall foliage color that early in the
season. The further north you go, the better your chances, though. Maine in particular
tends to be the earliest to begin to see a change in coloration.
You can certainly be in southern Maine or New Hampshire within about two hours' drive from
Boston. At this point, you may just want to plan one of your days as a day-trip north,
just in case the foliage is a disappointment.
For driving tour routes, see my article: New
England Fall Foliage Driving Tours.
If you have a specific destination in mind in Maine or New Hampshire, I find that MapQuest is excellent for driving route
directions. You simply enter your start and finish points, and the directions are
generated for you.
D'anne, I hope this is helpful. Please do not hesitate to write again if I can be of
further assistance.
All best wishes,
Kim Knox
