Spend a Fall Day in Southern Vermont's Gateway

The Apple Barn

By Kim Knox Beckius, About.com

Apple Barn Vermont

The Apple Barn in Bennington, Vermont, is a fun place to shop for local products.

(c) 1999 Kim Knox Beckius
Heading back south from the center of Bennington on Route 7, I made a brief stop at The Apple Barn, a delightful shop featuring apples from Southern Vermont Orchards, fresh pressed cider, baked pies straight from the oven, maple syrup, a pick-your-own pumpkin patch, and Vermont's first cornfield maze.

The cornfield maze measures 450 feet by 170 feet, and The Apple Barn's Harry Diamond says it took three men over 100 hours to create it. Admission is $2, and it takes most people 15 minutes to a half hour to wind their way through the 2-acre maze and... hopefully... back out again. On October 22, 23, and 24 from sunset until 10 p.m., the maze, which spells out the names of sponsors WZEC 97.5 FM and WalMart, will be haunted!

Diamond said The Apple Barn, which is open 11 months of the year (closed in February), seeks to be an "Agritainment Facility." He said, "We try to have things that are different and unique that the customer would enjoy."

If you can't make it to Vermont but you've got a hankering for genuine Vermont products, The Apple Barn ships apple gift packs, maple syrup, pancake mixes, Vermont cheddar cheese, Vermont honey, and other specialty products. Order online at The Apple Barn's Web site, or call them toll free at 888 8APPLES to order or to request a free catalog.
