Smith & Wesson, the Massachusetts-based firearms manufacturer, has designed and built guns for law enforcement professionals since the late 1800s, and since 1969, many of the region's police officers have received firearms training at the Smith & Wesson Academy in Springfield. What few Massachusetts travelers realize is that the Academy is also home to a museum of firearms history and an indoor shooting range that allows visitors to learn about the proper use of firearms and to experience shooting under the guidance of qualified instructors.
If you're looking for an out-of-the-ordinary indoor activity, particularly on a rainy or blustery day in New England, the Smith & Wesson Shooting Sports Center offers a "Try a Gun" package including gun rental, a box of ammunition, three targets and the lane fee. As of January 2009, the package price is $26.95 with no time limit. The package is available to adults ages 18 and up and children ages 12 and up with the permission and supervision of a parent or legal guardian.
Licensed gun owners may also use the Shooting Sports Center, and the lane fee is currently $20 with no time limit.
The Smith & Wesson Academy Store is located in the same building as the Shooting Center for those interested in purchasing firearms, accessories or Smith & Wesson apparel.
