The scene is dramatically different outside my window on this raw, rainy October day. Most of the trees in my backyard are bare, with just a few golden stragglers making their last stand. The fall of 2009 has flown by, it seems, and as we prepare to turn our clocks back this Sunday at 2 a.m., I wish that we could hit rewind and do it all again! If you missed seeing New England's fall splendor for yourself this year, be sure to plan ahead for a 2010 New England fall foliage trip. Thanks for sharing this season with me!

The color outside my window is surprisingly vivid this week considering last week's snow--an unusual phenomenon for October. The rustic autumn rainbow of hues ranges from copper to green gold, and as leaf confetti rains to the ground, the birds chirp noisy protests while gray squirrels scurry and crunch below. It's a scene I never tire of and will longingly recall when winter snow shrouds and silences my view.

Boy, was it cold this morning at 8 a.m. when I walked my daughter to the bus stop, and although I am finding it difficult to believe, there is snow in Friday's forecast! The autumn season continues to march along to a syncopated rhythm, and as you can see, the foliage in my backyard view is more colorful, but also more sparse this week. Some trees still sport green leaves, others are in the throes of color, and some are stark bare. Although this staggered progression means we haven't had a true "peak" here in central Connecticut, the good news is that the season lingers, and there are still bright and lovely scenes to see.

Wow, do we have color here in central Connecticut this week! As I drive around, I see a mix of trees in full autumn blush and others that apparently haven't yet gotten the message that fall is here. As you'll see in this latest picture of the view outside my window, one tree is stubbornly green, while others have begun to shed some of their vibrant adornment. Leaf peepers headed this way for the Columbus Day holiday weekend should be in for a stunning display.

There's no mistaking it's fall when I step outside the windowed door to my deck this week, not only because of the slight increase in color but because of the chill in the air. Still, the trees in my backyard have shed few leaves, and there is more green than tangerine in my view. Compare this week's photo with the one I took on the same day last year, and you'll see that my prediction last week about a slight stall to the seasonal progression was spot on.

Although the colors are still subtle, there is definitely a golden tinge to the scene outside my window this week. Connecticut foresters interviewed for a story in today's Hartford Courant predict strong foliage colors this season with the peak in parts of Connecticut corresponding with the Columbus Day holiday weekend. While the leaves seem to be changing early, a warming trend this week could slow the progression.

It's my eleventh year of sharing weekly photos of the view outside my window with fall foliage fanatics around the globe, so I'm a wee bit embarassed to admit: The season snuck up on me this year! At dinner the other night, my six-year-old daughter said, "Mommy--what are those orange lights?" as she gazed out the window into our yard. "Ack!" was my response, since those orange flickers were actually the first fall leaves in our view. (Can you spot them in this image?) Admittedly, the scene is still very green here in central Connecticut, but a few trees always seem to show off prematurely, giving us a sneak preview of the psychedelic pageant that will unfold in the weeks ahead. The abundant rain New England received in June and July has left trees healthy and leaves lush, so we're in for quite a show this year.
