12 New England and New York State Events Make ABA's Top 100

By Kim Knox Beckius, About.com

Feb 11 2004
Each year, The American Bus Association (ABA) selects North America's Top 100 Events. While the focus is on choosing those events that make great motorcoach destinations, the top events are a diverse selection of festivals and celebrations that you'll enjoy no matter how you get there! This year, the ABA's Selection Committee tapped a dozen New England and New York State events for the Top 100 List.

Here's a round-up of the events in New England and neighboring New York that made the Top 100 List:

June 25 - July 4, 2004
Ste.-Croix 2004 Commemorative Events
Calais, Maine and Bayside, New Brunswick
( 506) 466-7403/888 654-2004

Join in the international celebration of the 400th anniversary of the first French settlement in North America. Events take place in Maine and New Brunswick, Canada, two towns that are separated by the Ste. Croix River but united in history. Highlights include reenactments, theatrical performances, concerts, parades and fireworks.

June 27- July 11, 2004
Vermont Symphony Orchestra Summer Festival Tour
Vermont, statewide
800 VSO-9293

The Vermont Symphony Orchestra, founded nearly 70 years ago, plays a series of eight summer concerts at some of the most beautiful outdoor locations throughout Vermont. Each concert features a different theme such as pops, show music or classical music.

July 1-6, 2004
Boston Harborfest
Boston, Massachusetts
(617) 227-1528

Boston Harborfest is much more than a Fourth of July celebration. More than 200 events highlighting Boston's role in the founding of the United States make this America's Biggest Birthday Party. Events are held around the waterfront and downtown areas and include walking tours of historical sites, lectures, reenactments, outdoor concerts, fireworks and even a Chowderfest. More than half of the events are free.

July 4, 2004
Bristol Fourth of July Parade
Bristol, Rhode Island
(401) 245-0750

Bristol, Rhode Island, has been celebrating Independence Day with a parade since 1785 and claims to have the oldest such event in the country. Join in the patriotic festivities, provided free to the public thanks to the work of an all-volunteer committee and the donations of Rhode Island corporations and private citizens.

July 24-25, 2004
Mystic Seaport's Annual Antique & Classic Boat Rendezvous
Mystic, Connecticut
(860) 572-5341

Mystic Seaport hosts a rendezvous of boats built before 1957 during this annual waterfront event, a perfect fit for this living history museum that preserves Connecticut's maritime history.

August 7-14, 2004
Annual League of New Hampshire Craftsmen's Fair
Newbury, New Hampshire
(603) 224-3375

The oldest craft fair in America celebrates 71 years this year. You'll find more than 200 crafters, plus daily performances and exhibits, at the annual League of New Hampshire Craftsmen's Fair at Mt. Sunapee Resort.

August 24-29, 2004
Dutchess County Fair
Rhinebeck, New York
(845) 876-4001

The Dutchess County Fair, held for more than 150 years in Rhinebeck, New York, is one of the oldest and best agricultural fairs in the Northeast. I can vouch for the ABA's selection, as I've attended the fair almost every year since I was confined to a stroller! In addition to a carnival midway, the fair features traditional livestock exhibitions and shows, grandstand entertainment, commercial exhibits, crafts, a talent tent, a wonderful array of food and much, much more.
