Titanic Exhibit
Shipwreck Relics Exhibited in Boston

By Kim Knox Beckius, About.com

Dateline: 07/27/98

Titanic mania, spawned by the success of the multi-Oscar-winning lavish movie production, has arrived in Boston, where Titanic: The Artifact Exhibition has found a temporary home at Boston's World Trade Center through November 1.

The story of the Titanic's fateful voyage has captured the imagination of millions for decades, touchingly and dramatically illustrating man's fallibility and the triumphs and tragedies of human nature. Unlike the acclaimed movie's fictional portrayal, RMS Titanic, Inc.'s Boston exhibit captures the experience in yet another, incomparable way, presenting the relics recovered from the Titanic's underwater resting place.

What will you see at the exhibit? Since the 1985 discovery of Titanic's water-logged remains, two and a half miles below the ocean's surface, dive teams have extensively photographed the ill-fated ship and have recovered hundreds of artifacts--jewelry, personal objects, priceless treasures. You'll see underwater photos, recovered artifacts, detailed models of the ship, and multimedia presentations that tell the stories of survivors.

To reserve your exhibit tickets in advance, which is recommended, call toll-free: 1 888 744-7998. Regular admission is $13.95. A $12.95 senior rate (65 and over) is available, as is a children's ticket at $6.95 for those ages 5 to 12. Children under 5 are admitted free. An optional audio tour is available for an additional $2.00. As an added bonus, take your Titanic exhibit ticket stub to the Museum of Science for $1.00 off the IMAX film "Titanica," which runs through Labor Day.

In July and August, the exhibit is open every day beginning at 9 a.m. and closing at 6 p.m. Sunday through Thursday and 8 p.m. on Fridays and Saturdays. In September and October, the exhibit will be open daily from 9 a.m. until 6 p.m. Tours start every 15 minutes.

A map and directions to the World Trade Center are available online.

Interested in more than a day trip? Boston's Seaport Hotel, which is adjacent to the World Trade Center, is offering a special "Treasures of the Titanic" weekend getaway package. Weekend room rates start at $129 per room per night and include two free tickets to Titanic: The Artifact Exhibition. The hotel also offers other unique-to-Boston delights, including outdoor lobster clambakes every Saturday and a complimentary harbor cruise for guests on Sundays. For reservations and availability, call 1-877-732-7678 (1-877-SEAPORT). For other accommodations options, contact the Accommodations Representative at the World Trade Center Boston, by calling toll-free: 800 FOR-WTCB.
