Historic Boston Common is one of the oldest public parks in the U.S. It is the jewel in the "Emerald Necklace," a name given to the system of parks and open spaces throughout Boston's neighborhoods. Of course in March, when this photo was taken, Boston Common has more of a peridot hue than emerald. Still, this remarkable view from the now-closed Hancock Tower Observatory provides a sense of the magnitude and layout of what was once the city's common cattle grazing ground.
